Senate Approves Regola's
Oath of Office Bill
Senate Bill
1332 would provide a statewide standard
The Senate today unanimously approved Senate Bill 1332,
legislation introduced by Senator Bob Regola (R-39) that
would provide for a uniform oath of office for all elected
and appointed municipal officials who are required to take
an oath prior to taking office.
Under Senator Regola's legislation the standard oath
would be: I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will
support, obey and defend the Constitution of the United
States and the Constitution of this Commonwealth and that I
will discharge the duties of my office with fidelity.
"I am pleased that my colleagues supported this bill and
I hope the House will take it up as soon as possible. The
oath, as listed in Senate Bill 1332, is the same as that for
members of the General Assembly," said Sen. Regola.
"Currently, the local government codes contain different
sets of oaths. This legislation would simply provide a
straightforward oath that is consistent for all municipal
officials in the Commonwealth."
The County Commissioners Association of Pennsylvania, the
Pennsylvania League of Cities and Municipalities, the
Pennsylvania State Association of Township Supervisors and
the Pennsylvania State Association of Boroughs support the
legislation.
